What is the best time to travel to Mongolia?
The best time to visit Mongolia is from May 1 to September 15. It is a bit windy in May, but it is the time of the year when things turns green and animals graze peacefully. June, July and August is high season for tourism. July 11-13 is the 2019 Naadam Festival, so if you want to make the best of your trip, you should come during that time. July and early August are usually hot but still pleasant. In September and October you will enjoy beautiful sunny days with auburn of the splendid autumn, but at night it can be cool and chilly.
Is Mongolia a save to destination to travel?
Mongolia is a safe place to travel. There are no religious or political unrest and serious crimes against tourists. But we recommend to have some common sense and keep a note of your personal belongings and be aware of pickpockets. It is always best to have friends when going out at night in Ulaanbaatar. In the countryside though, people are friendly, hospitable and helpful, but you should always go with a tour guide to make sure you don’t get lost.
Is Mongolia a good place to travel with kids?
Kids should at least be 3 years old. Weather conditions, bumpy roads, standard meals (mostly meat) and sanitary facilities are not ideal for very young children.
Can I use credit card?
You can use credit cards in the larger shopping centers and HOTELS IN Ulaanbaatar. In the countryside, USD and Euros can be exchanged in banks (low rate) and are accepted in some touristic service organizations. It is wise to exchange some money before leaving Ulaanbaatar.
Should tourists tip?
Though tipping is not a common cultural practice in Mongolia, but tips are accepted during tours. The amount depends on the duration of your trip and the number of employees on the trip. If you would like to show your gratitude and appreciation feel free to give a little tip.
Why is traveling to Mongolia so expensive?
Mongolia has a vast territory, and most off-road trips are driven on high-consumption 4X4 jeep. The average trip takes 900-1800 miles (1400-2800 kilometers). Some trips include domestic flights. Most tourist camps have electricity and hot water from independent sources with high costs (all included in the tour price).
Upon arrival in Mongolia, you do not need to spend a penny, unless you buy personal items, such as alcoholic beverages and souvenirs. All expenses for accommodation, food, transportation and entertainment are included in the tour price.
What to bring?
-Hiking boots, walking shoes and sandals
-Sunhat, sunglasses and sun block lotion
-First aid kit
-Raincoat and warm clothes if you travel to Khangai part or mountainous area
-Don’t forget to take your binocular or camera
Bring your insurance certificate with you. It helps to have the document on hand in case of luggage loss, injury or other health related problems. You can also be re-insured by a Mongolian Insurance company and get reimbursed in Ulaanbaatar city.
No vaccinations are required to enter Mongolia from any country. Visitors should be in good health condition and able to engage in a reasonable amount of physical activities. Medical services are only available in provincial centers, towns and soum (administrative units). Be sure to bring an adequate supply of any prescription medication when you are on tour. Diarrhea and altitude sickness are common for travelers.
Generally all hotels in Ulaanbaatar have a free wifi, where you can get Internet connection. You can also buy a GSM system in case you want to call home in Europe, Asia, or America. Prepaid international calling cards are commonly used. GSM and CDMA are both used.
If you cancel at least 7 day(s) in advance of the scheduled departure, there is no cancellation fee.
If you cancel between 3 and 6 day(s) in advance of the scheduled departure, there is a 50 percent cancellation fee.
If you cancel within 2 day(s) of the scheduled departure, there is a 90 percent cancellation fee.
